Yes, that is correct. Our search widget is available for desktop and for mobile devices it is displayed in the mobile menu only. And it inherits all AJAX settings from the desktop one. We will also consider adding a separate search widget for mobile version in our next updates.
As a workaround, you can display it now with Elementor and HTML Block in the header.
